AGULHAS' Positive Impact: How Our Sustainable Freediving Gear Is Driving Ocean Conservation

With over twenty years of freediving experience, our co-founders, Hanli & Peter, have travelled the globe exploring, documenting, and protecting the ocean. “During this time, we’ve realised the importance of sustainable products that don’t harm the ocean. We’ve turned our long wish list into purpose-built products with the highest possible sustainability standards ourselves.”

Our ultimate aim is to invite as many people as possible to explore below the surface and giving them the opportunity to do so without damaging the very ocean they love. We believe that humans and oceans are deeply connected, and freediving offers a powerful way to connect people to the sea. Yet the current freediving industry focuses mainly on performance and does not take full responsibility for its impact. Our oceans are being overexploited, and we need urgent action to combat the environmental and biodiversity crisis.

We believe for-profit business can have a non-profit heart, and that people, oceans, and business can thrive together.

Here are some examples of how we put our positive impact manifesto into action:

  • Our technical range is designed around the principles of performance, innovation, and function using sustainable materials and circular economy thinking.
  • We are deliberate about the materials we use and how they can be fixed, replaced, or disposed of, to open our customers’ eyes to what they own, where it came from, and what happens to it next. We encourage customers to become environmental stewards through knowledge and conscious consumption.
  • Our wetsuits are made of Japanese Yamamoto rubber – a high-quality, warm, and flexible rubber foam made from Limestone.
  • Our freediving mask is modular in design, meaning elements can be replaced if damaged and recycled at end of life.
  • We use mono materials wherever possible to assist in them being recycled – silicone snorkel and weight belt / stainless steel screws & buckle.
  • Travel and storage solutions to assist with the durability of more fragile products, like the Carbon Fibre fin protector and watertight mask box.
  • Our ‘plastic’ packaging from the factory is biodegradable and compostable, and where possible, they have a zip closure to encourage reuse.

As a company, we consider the whole supply chain in our products. It’s no longer good enough to only look at what we are doing ourselves, but every single part and packaging we buy is carefully considered too, as is the distance it has to travel to be used. We also consider the factories we use to be a part of our community, together we learn and develop.

AGULHAS is committed to sustainable, purpose-built products for ocean lovers, using circular economy thinking, and sustainable materials where possible. We believe that the freediving industry must take responsibility for its impact, and we’re dedicated to raising awareness and driving ocean conservation in the dive industry. We aim for full transparency and take responsibility for the full life cycle of our products, from design to disposal.
