How the I AM WATER Foundation Protects Inland Waters and Connects Communities to Ocean Conservation

IAM River Guardians_International Water Week

Clean water is essential for life on Earth, and the I AM WATER Foundation knows this better than anyone. The organisation is dedicated to protecting our oceans by starting much closer to home—within our local communities. I AM WATER believes that safeguarding the health of our streams, rivers, and lakes is the first step in preserving our oceans.

The Importance of Inland Water Protection

Ocean conservation often brings to mind images of vast, open seas. However, the I AM WATER Foundation emphasises that every drop of water, no matter where it begins, eventually finds its way to the ocean. Whether from a mountain stream or a city drain, inland waters flow into larger bodies that connect directly to the sea. This means that the health of local water sources is directly linked to the health of our oceans.

In low-income areas, access to clean water is a critical issue. These communities frequently face challenges that make protecting local water sources difficult, including polluted rivers and contaminated lakes. Despite these challenges, these waters are crucial for the well-being of both people and the environment.

I AM WATER Foundation’s Mission

The I AM WATER Foundation is on a mission to change the narrative around ocean and water conservation. The foundation is committed to educating and empowering communities to take responsibility for their water sources. Through workshops, educational programs, and community initiatives, the foundation teaches sustainable practices that benefit both people and the planet.

I AM WATER develops and hosts innovative and immersive workshops for Grade 7 students from underserved communities, creating a culture of caring and understanding.

Educating the Next Generation

Education is a cornerstone of I AM WATER Foundation’s efforts. The foundation believes that knowledge is key to conservation. By educating the next generation about the importance of clean water, I Am Water Foundation is planting the seeds for a sustainable future.

The IAW River Guardians Workshops offer a one-day experience designed to highlight the connection between river and ocean health. These workshops use environmental education to explore topics like the water cycle, river health, conservation challenges, and empowering solutions. Participants engage in citizen science through a mini-SASS activity, illustrating how human actions impact river ecosystems. This is complemented by a river ecosystem exploration and riverbank cleanup to deepen understanding. Held along two sections of Cape Town’s Liesbeeck River, these workshops help participants see how their actions can positively impact both rivers and oceans.

Education, exploration, and understanding are crucial for healthy rivers and oceans. The program focuses on changing behaviours at the source of ocean pollution, empowering youth to make a meaningful difference.

How You Can Help

This International Water Week, I AM WATER Foundation invites everyone to join their mission. Whether in an urban city or a rural community, everyone can make a difference by protecting the water sources in their area. By educating themselves, getting involved, and inspiring others to do the same, individuals can help ensure that rivers and oceans remain clean, healthy, and vibrant for future generations.
