ABOUT US

WE ARE OCEAN PEOPLE,
WE CONNECT YOU TO THE OCEAN,
FOR GOOD.

AGULHAS was born out of necessity. An ocean exploration brand designing and producing beautiful, high performance products that never compromise on sustainability.

It started with a garage full of half- broken masks and fins. If only I could fix this one part, this mask would still be perfect. If only I could strap my fins onto a backpack I could safely travel with them more comfortably.

AGULHAS isn’t just another diving brand, we exist only because we love the ocean more than anything else. We are not business as usual, we are business unusual. Our focus is on our impact first. This is why it took us over two years to ideate, design and test our Mokarran Mask. Why make another thing in a world full of things if it isn’t extraordinary, if it doesn’t solve several problems? SWe believe that the ocean offers a place for connection with self, community and nature. We know that blue spaces offer relief from the world of technology and stress. We want to see more and more people discover the ocean; for adventure, for beauty, for peace. But we don’t want to see the very ocean we love destroyed by the gear we use.

We are freedivers who have logged thousands of hours at sea. Our products are for everyone who wishes to see beneath the waves. Snorkellers, scuba divers, freedivers, splashers and swimmers. Welcome to AGULHAS.

Why The Name, AGULHAS?

Cape Agulhas is the southernmost tip of Africa, the meeting place of the cold south Atlantic Ocean and the warm Indian Ocean. The Agulhas Current is the warm current that streams down the east coast of South Africa from Mozambique to Cape Town. Legend goes that the early Portuguese explorers rounding the Cape  found that their compass needle could not tell the difference between true and magnetic north at this wild point, and so the name Agulhas,  Portuguese (agulha) for needle. Some say the name came from the treacherous needle shaped boulders along the coast... whichever story you choose, AGULHAS is the name of a wild, free ocean lifestyle.

“It’s the silence that is most startling. In a dark blue Indian Ocean, raked by shafts of subtropical sunlight, I’m swimming alongside a cluster of at least twenty joyfully cavorting dolphins. They dip, rise, shimmy, twist and circle around me, but not a single sound disturbs the deep peace. If the silence surprises, so does the freedom. I hadn’t expected, after just 24 hours’ instruction, to be seven metres beneath the waves, powered by a single breath and unencumbered by tanks or tubes, gliding within feet of these agile mammals.”

Meet The Founders

Peter Marshall

Peter spent most of his life in a swimming pool competing for the USA National Team and Stanford University.

After 8 World Records and 3 World Championship Titles he left the chlorine for the salt water.

He became a freediving instructor and began taking photos underwater while helping found the ocean conservation non profit, I AM WATER.

He adds his years of aquatic acumen to the design of the technical range and continues to advocate for more sustainable ocean exploration gear.

Hanli Prinsloo

Hanli is a South African ocean advocate, multiple freediving record holder and ocean conservationist.

She is an acclaimed international keynote speaker, has been named one of Conde Nast Travellers Top 50 Travellers of our Time and is a Young Global Leader under the World Economic Forum.

Her personal quest of freediving with marine megafauna has resulted in numerous exhibitions, films and articles about the human/animal connection.

Hanli has taught over 2000 people how to freedive and believes the ocean is a place for all.

Domenico Iuliano & Paola Rigamonti

Dom & Paola are ocean lovers from their very roots, growing up by the seaside in Italy.Their passion for the seas is the main reason behind their decision to set up an Ocean Conservation Foundation and to spend much of their time in the Spanish Balearic Islands.

AGULHAS Product Philosophy

When you invest in an AGULHAS product, you invest in a more sustainable ocean economy. Every product takes years at the drawing board with top product designers and  in the water getting tested by experienced ocean users.

We design for:

  • DURABILITY: The design and construction of a quality product ought to last decades not months. We want ours to last as long as possible to do right by the raw materials we are putting into them.
  • MODULARITY AND REPAIRABILITY: There is no need to throw away gear when only one part of it is broken. We design for repair with modular and replaceable parts.
  • CONSIDERED PRODUCTION: We carefully select the best production materials and methods possible.
  • END OF LIFE: We have put so much thought into our products that throwing it away is not an option. We design for our products to have a continuing life with their user. We aim to first repair a part when needed rather than dispose of the whole product. As a last option, we design for recycling: dismantle, separate, recycle.
  • SUPPORT FOR LOCAL CONSERVATION: Our roots are in the ocean conservation world,  and we want to give back to those on the frontlines working to protect our oceans and represent communities most affected by climate change, plastic pollution, species  loss and other ocean challenges.
